Can you think of people who wear uniforms? Baseball players? Soccer players? Policemen? Firemen? Pastors? Priests? Health care workers?

Do you know why certain people wear uniforms? One reason is that when people wear a uniform, especially athletes, we are able to tell which team they represent. When we watch a soccer game or a basketball game, we are able to tell one team from the other. Athletes wear uniforms with symbols and colors that represent not only their team, but their school. Each team member has been selected and given authority to represent their team and their school.

Another reason people wear uniforms is for protection. In the case of firemen, their uniforms are designed to protect them when they fight fires. Football players wear helmets, mouth guards and protective padding to protect them from being injured during a game. Health care workers use gloves and masks to protect themselves and their patients from infections.

When Jesus lived on earth he appointed seventy people to go in pairs “into every city and place, where he was about to come” (10:1). He told them that when they went into a home they were to say, “Peace be to this house” (10:5). He also said, “Whoever listens to you listens to me…” (10″16).

In this way, Jesus selected team members and gave them authority to represent God. He sent teams of people out to carry God’s message of peace. The peace that was offered was like a uniform so others would know who the disciples represented and which team they were on. Jesus gave them authority and also protection.

As Christians we have been given the authority to represent God. We need to live our lives in a way that honors God so others will know which team we represent.
