Genesis 1:1-5

The Light of Love

By Lois Parker Edstrom

Many strange and wonderful creatures live in our world. There are types of fish that live so deep in the oceans that they have no need for eyes. It is totally dark that far down in the ocean and the fish that live there use other parts of their bodies find food and get along in such a challenging place.

You and I need light to be able to see and to grow. Sunlight warms the earth and causes fruits, vegetables, and grains to grow, providing us with healthy food. We get vitamin D from sunlight, a substance our bodies need to have strong, healthy bones. And think of how good it feels to sit in a patch of sunlight or play outside on a sunny day. Sunshine warms our bodies and just makes us feel better.

“God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light” (1:3). “God saw the light, and saw that it was good” (1:4).

Even in the darkness of night, the moon provides light. Light helps us to find our way and know where we are going. We can think of God’s love as a kind of light that helps us find our way in the world. Just as light helps us to be healthy and happy, so does God’s love.

God has provided everything we need to live in our beautiful world. God gives us the light of his love and it is good. “Let there be light.”
