Psalm 46
Quiet Time

By Lois Parker Edstrom

Sometimes there is so much noise in our world. Think about it. Cars honking, airplanes flying overhead, loud music, a phone ringing, noisy toys, dogs barking, people talking…

When we move we hear the sound of our footsteps. We open and close doors. Our pencil makes a scratchy noise on paper. We talk with those around us…..

Too much noise can cause us to feel anxious and jumpy. We all need to find a way to have some quiet time.

Once I was in the woods by a lake, far from any town or highway. It was completely silent. There was no breeze to rattle the leaves, no animals moving about, complete silence. That doesn’t happen very often, but when it does it is a very special experience.

We hear God’s voice in the Bible saying, “Be still, and know that I am God” (46:10). When you are quiet it is easier to think about the really important things – to think about God.

We need stillness in our lives. Do you have a quiet place? Perhaps a tree house, a tent in the backyard, or a cozy chair in a corner of your room…

It is good to find a place where you can rest for a while and be still, free from the sounds of the world. We all learn more by listening than by talking. Listen and wait for God’s Spirit to give you wisdom, strength, and love. Make time to be alone with God.
