John 3:1-17

Listen to the Wind

By Lois Parker Edstrom

OBJECT SUGGESTED:

Kite

Do you like to fly kites? It is so much fun to see a kite climb into the sky and feel the kite tugging on the string in your hand. Kites come in all shapes and colors. Some are diamond- shaped, others box-shaped. Some are even shaped like birds or dragons. Will you describe the kites you have seen?

What causes a kite to fly? Yes, it must have a suitable shape to be able to lift into the air and it must have wind. Can you see wind? How do you know the wind is blowing? Yes, you can see it moving the leaves on trees. You can feel it on your face. Sometimes you can even hear it.

Jesus describes the Spirit of God as being like the wind. He says, “The wind blows where it wants to, and you hear its sound, but don’t know where it comes from and where it is going. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit” (3:8).

Isn’t that a good description of the Holy Spirit? Although we can’t see The Spirit we sometimes feel it. We know the difference between right and wrong because the Holy Spirit has given us that information and we feel and hear it as the truth. Just as a kite must have wind to be able to fly, we need the Spirit of God to teach and guide us in living a good life. If we listen, we can hear and we can feel The Spirit of God.
