Ephesians 6:10-20

About Being Prepared!

By Dell Smith Klein

OBJECT: Mittens, warm hat, wool scarf, snow boots, heavy jacket. You can have a child put on each of these items as you talk or simply hold up the item. As you talk about the Armor of God, you can hold up picture of each item–belt, helmet, breastplate, shield, sword, shoes.

KEY VERSE:Therefore, put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and, having done all, to stand.

SERMON:

Not long ago, my friends and I drove up to the mountains for a snow day. It was warm in the bus, and we drove along singing songs and laughing. We could hardly wait to get to the mountain so we could play in the snow.

We went to the mountain prepared. Look what we took along! First of all, we dressed warmly in slacks and warm sweater, socks and shoes. (Be prepared to pick up each item and hold it so the children can see it, as you talk about the item.) Since, we knew we were going to play in the snow, we put on a heavy jacket, and wrapped a wool scarf around our neck. And, we wore a knitted hat and mittens. Oh and we didn’t forget to bring our snow boots to pull on over our shoes. We were prepared for the cold weather!

Sure enough when we got to the mountain, it was very cold. Even with the sun shining on the snow, we were glad that we had all of those garments to keep us warm.

The Bible tells us that we are to put on God’s Armor because that is important part of our spiritual clothing.

We’re to have the belt of truth buckled around our waist (Ephesians 6:14).

We’re to wear the breastplate of righteousness (Ephesians 6:14).

Our feet are to be covered with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace (Ephesians 6:15).

But that isn’t all: We’re to take up the shield of faith (Ephesians 6:16).

and take the helmet of salvation (Ephesians 6:17).

and the Sword of the Spirit (Word of God) (Ephesians 6:17).

It is important to always be prepared. Before you even need these items, it is a good idea to have them.

Truth – Always tell the truth. Always know that the Bible tells the truth and we can believe it.

Righteousness – it is big word that means do the right thing, be honest, and blameless in the way you live.

Readiness – Always ready to share about the Lord with your friends or your family. And at the same time, be kind to others so there will be peace in your house and people will see your gentleness.

Shield of Faith – Faith has to do with the confidence that we have in the Lord that we can trust God all the time.

Helmet of Salvation – Salvation is that important part of our Christian life that we know Jesus died for the wrong things we have done, so we can life for him.

Sword of the Spirit – That is the Word of God. We call it the Holy Bible. Inside the Bible is where we will find the true stories about God and about God’s people. When we read the book every day, we learn those stories and are able to share them with others.

So, there you have the story of being prepared for a snow trip by wearing your heavy jacket, warm scarf, mittens and snow boots.

And you also have heard about the Armor of God that we are to put on daily.

PRAYER: God, we are thankful that you have shown us how to prepare for a trip to the snow. We are also thankful that you’ve shown us how to prepare for life by putting on the Armor of God. Amen.
