Children’s Sermon

Matthew 10:24-39

Do Not Be Afraid

By Lois Parker Edstrom

Objects suggested: Comb and/or hairbrush

It appears as if everyone combed their hair this morning. What other things do you do to take care of your hair? Yes, you wash your hair, cut your hair; perhaps you braid your hair and tie ribbons in it.

Some of you have curly hair; others straight. Some have black hair, others have brown hair, blonde
hair, red hair and a few people in the congregation have grey hair.

Our hair helps keep us warm. Have you ever thought about how many hairs grow on your head? Some people have more hair than others, but usually a person has between 140,000 to 200,000 strands of hair growing on their head. That is a lot of hair!

In the Bible Jesus talks about hair. He talks about how much he cares for each person – that each
person is important and precious. He says, “the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Therefore don’t be afraid….” (10:30-31).

It is quite extraordinary to think that God, the Father, knows you so well that “the very hairs of your head are all numbered.” We are encouraged not to worry or be afraid, but to trust that God knows how we feel and knows what is best for each one of us. When you comb your hair each morning remember the words of Jesus “the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Therefore don’t be afraid….” That is a good way to start the day.
