Matthew 5:13-20

Bring Out the Flavor

By Lois Parker Edstrom

Object suggested: Salt and/or pickles.

Do you like pickles? Part of what makes a pickle taste so good is salt.

You may also like a little salt sprinkled on your breakfast eggs or on popcorn. Salt brings out the flavors of food like no other ingredient can.

Salt is also important to our health. We need it so that our bodies will keep the right balance of water in our tissues. It helps our heart beat correctly and is necessary for our nerves to send messages to and from our brain. Salt even helps our muscles functionproperly so that we don’t get leg cramps. There is salt in every cell in our body!

Salt is inexpensive and is something we don’t think much about, but it is very important and is something everyone must have. Years ago,in certain parts of the world, where salt was scarce, it was as valuable as gold.

Now think about this: Jesus said, “You are the salt of the earth.”How exciting to think that we can bring out the flavors of life. When we accept God’s love it is as if His Love is in every cell of our body! We share that love with others because it is something every one needs. “You are the salt of the earth.” You are important and much more valuable than gold.
