2 Samuel 11:1-15

Just Because We Can!

by Debra Rathert

Object: A Flyswatter

What do I have in my hand?

What can I do with this?

Can I use it to hit you? Because I can – does that mean I should?

Recently in the news they showed a video of an older boy at a day care facility hitting and kicking the younger kids.

Do you suppose he did that because he could? I didn’t watch the whole story, so I don’t know why he did what he did.

In the Old Testament story today King David did a bad thing––a couple of bad things––because he could, he was king.

But just because he could (do something) – that does not make it right to do.

Sometimes we do things we shouldn’t simply because we can. That doesn’t make it right.

When we do those things, we need to ask God to forgive us for doing them. And He will.

Remember: Just Because We Can – Doesn’t Mean We (Always) Should!

Let’s pray: Father in Heaven, please remind us that we need to be careful of what we do and when we do things we shouldn’t please forgive us. Amen.
