1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

How Long Is Forever?

By Lois Parker Edstrom

The Bible is the place to go to learn all sorts of things about how to live a good life. Let’s talk about some of the helpful things we can learn from studying the Bible.

Here are just a few of the useful things that come to mind: We learn about love, how to treat others with respect, how to make good decisions, how to control our temper. We also find rules for what we should not do – things that would be harmful to ourselves and others.

Let’s hear some of your ideas about how the Bible has helped you learn how to live a good and happy life.

Today’s lesson gives us suggestions for how to comfort someone who has suffered a great loss. The greatest loss comes when someone we love dies. We miss that person and feel very sad. Perhaps you have felt sorrow like this yourself.

The Bible teaches us that when a person, who has accepted God’s love, dies they will “be with the Lord forever” (4:17). And then the Bible reminds us to “comfort one another with these words” (4:18).

How long is forever? Yes, it is a time that will not end. What a comfort to know those loved ones who have died will “be with the Lord forever.” The Scriptures tell us that God is with us always. God loves us now and without end.
